Cruzan Rum
« on: 08/14/2008 09:02 AM »
I don't recall who recommended the Cruzan rum, but I just purchased a bottle of their Estate Dark Rum.  It's pretty tasty!  I would definitely put it right up there (but not ahead of) Appleton's Estate rum.  The real test will come later, when I try it out with a smoke!  Thanks, to whoever you are, for the recommendation!

It should be good with a cigar. I like a nice aged rum with my cigar but I usually try to match color. If it is a lighter stick I go with a lighter colored rum. If it a dark maduro, I go with a darker rum with more molasses in it.

I love Appleton's Estate. Always have a bottle or 2 in the house.
Never tried Cruzan - will have to.

Appleton is definitely my favorite.  But this Cruzan is very good, as well.  I'm glad I tried it.  I would recommend it.  Give it a shot.  Since you're an Appleton fan too, I think you'll enjoy this as well.

I used to think Appleton was my favorite. I still keep it around and love the 12 year old but now the new favorite is Zaya. It has a dark carmel color and wonderful flavor. It is similar to Appleton but maybe a little bit sweeter with more depth of flavor.

I'll have to see if I can get that here in PA.  It sounds delicious.  Thanks for the recommendation.  I'm always in search of great rums!

Not being a rum drinker, how do you guys drink it?  I'm sure your not mixing it up in some fruity little girly drink and shoving a umbrella in it.

On the rocks?

A vast majority of the time, I just drink it neat....straight up;  right out of the bottle and into the glass....and then of course down the hatch!

I drink the rum the same as a cognac. Neat in a rocks glass or snifter. At least that way for the finer aged rums. Otherwise the standard rum drinks work but I would never mix an aged rum.

Time to re awaken this thread.  I use to be a rum and coke drinker in my "youth" before I discovered good cigars.  Well after watching a new TV show where they drank rum straight this got my attention.  I never thought of drinking rum straight.  Sure, I drink scotch and rye straight.  So one evening I took out a bottle of Lambs Navy and a CAO MX2 Gordo and went outside and had the rum straight, which turned out to be fantastic and it went great with the cigar!

I like a good rum with a cigar but over the weekend I really enjoyed a good aged anejo tequila with a Tatuaje cigar. It was a wonderful combination but probably wouldn't work well with a maduro cigar.

I smoke mainly maduro cigars which go well with the dark sweet rums I think :shades:
