Tawny Port and Cigars
« on: 06/01/2008 10:21 AM »
I think tawny ports from Australia are a super match. The weight of the alcohol can stand up to any cigar. They're not overly sweet. They're a great palate cleaser, but most of all you can get world class quality wines for around 10 bucks a bottle and they're sipper wines so you won't drink it all in one setting.

Welcome to the forums, sir.  Are you a wine merchant or just a big Australian tawny port fan?  I must admit to not having much experience pairing wines or bourbon with cigars, although I like both.  I've just never found that synergistic experience so many have and tend to drink water.  I look forward to your future posts on the subject!

Yeah.  I'm a big fan of the Tawny, especially paired with a stogie.

The story Ted is referring to is regarding a drug store near us that had a Liquor store in the back.  I went in their picking up beer and decided to look at their port selection.  To my surprise they had the Taylor-Fladgate 20 Year Tawny for $15 a regular 750 ML bottle.  I knew it had to be a misprice since they usually go for about $40-$50 a bottle anywhere else.  I quickly grabbed all they had - 4 bottles and carried them to the checkout counter.  I anxiously watched them scan the bottles to see if it actually came up $15 and they did!

Every now and then I would stop in and see if they had more.  They would get another 4 or so bottles every couple of weeks at the same $15 price and I would just grab them all up again.  This went on for just under 2 years before they finally caught the mistake and fixed it.  I never was out of a great Tawny port and would bring a bottle to get togethers.  Good times!

What a great Port story. I've been meaning to try a port and a smoke ever since I heard of the idea here, I just have not got around to it yet.

I haven't seen ya around yet, so welcome to the site!  The ports you and Paul are talking about sound really great.  The only port I've ever really had was from a local winery here in southeastern PA.  I thought it was pretty good.  I'm really into having a drink to sip on while enjoying a cigar.  I'd rather not sit there and pound beers.  I actually like a little rum with my smokes, especially Appleton.  Again, welcome to the site and the boards!  Looking foward to some more input and reviews!

Isn't a Port supposed to be a rather sweet, desert type wine?

I have wanted to try a Port and a cigar but a pal of mine advised against it because of the sweet flavor. Hell, I dont care, most of my wine comes in a box anyway...

I used to like port, but now that I dont drink much, I cant get past the overwhelmingly strong flavor. Its like a table wine on steroids.
